In this photo series, read how a muddy hillside was transformed into a full-fledged boutique resort in less than 7 months time\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever the chance for a day trip to Lembeh-in-progress came up in 2017, I was quick to join and document the project. The result is the &#8220;photo essay&#8221; below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">March 2017 &#8211; humble beginnings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After obtaining all the necessary permits, we started clearing the land by the end of 2016. Rumors of a new resort soon started in the village of <em>Batu Riri<\/em>. Obviously, people were happy with a new chance of finding work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/01-20170302-team-disembarking.jpg\" alt=\"Surya jumping off the boat\" class=\"wp-image-38562 lazyload\" width=\"719\" height=\"478\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/01-20170302-team-disembarking.jpg\" alt=\"Surya jumping off the boat\" class=\"wp-image-38562\" width=\"719\" height=\"478\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2nd of March 2017 marks a special day, and everyone in the neighborhood is invited. This is because today will be the official start of construction. Our team visits from Thalassa Manado with a few supplies and a ton of food for the workers and invited guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/02-20170302-jakob-with-flag.jpg\" alt=\"Jakob our construction supervisor\" class=\"wp-image-38567 lazyload\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/02-20170302-jakob-with-flag.jpg\" alt=\"Jakob our construction supervisor\" class=\"wp-image-38567\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jakob (l) is one of our senior staff and Lembeh&#8217;s construction supervisor. He holds a sermon to bless the land and the building process. Village heads, the priest, Thalassa staffers and other notables all take turns laying a stone. Guests &amp; friends help out by passing buckets of concrete to be poured into anything that requires it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/09-20170415-supply-boat-1.jpg\" alt=\"Supply boat\" class=\"wp-image-38602 lazyload\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/09-20170415-supply-boat-1.jpg\" alt=\"Supply boat\" class=\"wp-image-38602\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The supply boat does non-stop runs, picking up and dropping off building supplies, food, tools, personnel and so on. Because we can&#8217;t use our dive boat for this, we hire the boat on a contract basis, making its owner quite happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/10-20170415-kitchen-team.jpg\" alt=\"The kitchen team\" class=\"wp-image-38607 lazyload\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/10-20170415-kitchen-team.jpg\" alt=\"The kitchen team\" class=\"wp-image-38607\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hard work makes workers hungry, and traditionally, the task of cooking falls on the women. There&#8217;s nothing like a plate of spicy <em>nasi goreng<\/em> for lunch after some construction action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">June 2017 &#8211; it&#8217;s all coming together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/11-20170621-kids-with-plants-1.jpg\" alt=\"Loading up on plants\" class=\"wp-image-38612 lazyload\" width=\"720\" height=\"478\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/11-20170621-kids-with-plants-1.jpg\" alt=\"Loading up on plants\" class=\"wp-image-38612\" width=\"720\" height=\"478\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kids from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/manadonese-dive-guides\/\">school in Tongkaina<\/a> join us on today&#8217;s trip. A large shipment of garden plants is brought from Manado, destined for Thalassa Lembeh&#8217;s lovely central garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/12-20170621-kitchen-under-construction.jpg\" alt=\"The kitchen under construction\" class=\"wp-image-38617 lazyload\" width=\"719\" height=\"478\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thalassamanado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/12-20170621-kitchen-under-construction.jpg\" alt=\"The kitchen under construction\" class=\"wp-image-38617\" width=\"719\" height=\"478\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few months of solid building results in everything truly taking shape. Here we are standing in our kitchen. Our first guests have already booked their stay to join the opening ceremony. After the ceremony it&#8217;s time for (what else) food!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So there you have it.
